Ever since I graduated from college and started down the path of becoming a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional in the early 90’s, I have wanted to help families make smart decisions about how to manage their financial affairs and build wealth to accomplish their most important dreams.  To that end, our team at SBS Retirement Consultants, LLC has helped the families we support make many of these dreams come true.  Our commitment to our existing families as well as new families we begin to support in the future will be to do more of the same.  We will help you manage your cash flow, make smart financial decisions for today, and help you build wealth into the future so that the dreams you have for your life become your reality! Born and raised in Fairbanks, I graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks with a BBA in business administration with an emphasis in finance in 1991, as well as a BBA in economics in 1992.  My career began in the financial services industry in 1992 as a financial planner with IDS Financial Services (now Ameriprise Financial). In early 2004,  I partnered with Shannon Staiger and Shawn Wiegand to form SBS Retirement Consultants, LLC, to provide a truly independent and comprehensive approach to financial planning.  I believe that to provide superior client service and guidance, an investment professional should be free from the influences present at many of the traditional Wall Street firms.  I’m a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional (CFP®) Professional and Accredited Investment Fiduciary® (AIF®) designee and hold the Chartered Financial Consultant® (ChFC®), Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor® (CRPC®), and Chartered Life Underwriter® (CLU®) designations. In the Fairbanks community, I am a trustee of the Greater Fairbanks Hospital Foundation, a board member of the Carol H. Brice Family Center, and the current president of Hockey Club Fairbanks.  In our spare time, my wife Karma & I enjoy spending time with family and friends, traveling, and skiing, running, and biking the great Alaskan landscape.

A managing partner and Chartered Financial Consultant® (ChFC®), I am a lifelong resident of Fairbanks, AK. I graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1997 with a B.B.A. in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance. As a child, my parents let me pick a couple stocks and track them in the newspaper, which led to my fascination with the stock market and investments.

After graduating from college, I joined my business partners, Ben Roth and Shawn Wiegand, and quickly realized that simply focusing on the stock market and investments was not enough, and that comprehensive financial planning was critical to the financial success of our clients. With this newfound enlightenment, I wanted to build upon what I had already learned in school and in practice by attending graduate school at the University of Denver where I received my Master of Science in Finance (MSF).

In addition to graduate school, I pursued the ChFC® designation, which is an Advanced Financial Planning designation awarded by The American College of Financial Services. Additionally, I earned my Accredited Investment Fiduciary® (AIF®) to demonstrate my commitment to carrying out a fiduciary standard of care to serve the best interests of our clients. The satisfaction and joy of helping someone achieve their goals is indescribable, and I feel fortunate to be in a position to partner with people to do this every day.

When not in the office, I enjoy spending time with my wife Michelle and our three children Zoe, Hailey, and Orin. You can find me spending time with my family outdoors, especially on our four wheelers and boat. As long as I can take the occasional trip to escape the Fairbanks winters, before I get old enough that I do not want to deal with the cold anymore, I am proud to call Fairbanks home.

I joined SBS Retirement Consultants in October 2015 to provide additional office support and have since developed into a financial advisor for our expanding practice.  I grew up in Saskatchewan, Canada, before moving to Fairbanks in 2002 on a scholarship to study and play hockey at UAF. Upon graduating in 2006 with a BBA in finance, I spent the next nine years playing professional hockey. I was a member of the 2010 Stanley Cup championship team, Chicago Blackhawks. I also spent three years playing hockey overseas in Germany, Sweden, and Switzerland. Today, as an Advisor at SBS Retirement Consultants, I help clients plan and achieve their goals through a comprehensive financial planning approach.  I contribute to all trading operations, preparing for and participating in most client meetings, and help clients with inquiries regarding investments, Social Security, insurance, and many other topics.  I really enjoy the people I works with, both clients and co-workers, and I am excited to continue learning and growing in my position. In 2016, I earned my MBA with a concentration in Capital Markets from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.  In 2006, I graduated from UAF with a BA Finance degree.  I am a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional.  Additionally, I hold FINRA Series 7 (General Securities) and Series 66 (Uniform Combined State Law) securities registrations through Commonwealth Financial Network® and state of Alaska insurance licenses. My wife, Chelsea, and I have three children, Mia, Luca, & Jasper.  As a family, we enjoy camping, biking, playing sports, fishing and spending time with our family and friends.

Ethan helps maintain our proactive customer service approach as he provides office support while studying to become a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional.

In 2019, he chose to stop playing hockey to focus on school and his future career. In early 2020 he was attending the University of Nevada Las Vegas when COVID-19 hit, at which point he opted to return home for good. He obtained his Bachelors in Finance with a minor in Economics in 2021 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks while working full time with us! Laura started with SBS Retirement Consultants in October 2012 to provide needed office support with the increased responsibilities of our growing practice. She has since become the Operations Manager. Originally from Watertown, South Dakota, she graduated from South Dakota State University in 1991 with a BA in English and a minor in Commercial Economics. Her career has spanned from the retail music industry to commercial insurance, and from Minnesota to Washington state.

Laura & her husband Michael relocated to Iowa to be closer to family when he retired from teaching, and is very happy to be able to continue to be part of the SBS family and service our clients remotely. Rebecca (Becky) joined the SBS Retirement Consultants team in July 2014. She manages our office, providing support for our expanding practice, and is our client event coordinator. Growing up in Bismarck, North Dakota, she graduated from Moorhead State University in 2000 with a BFA in sculpture and a minor in art history. Before coming to SBS, she had worked six years as a call center supervisor for a cable and internet provider in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where she focused on building company culture and team development.

Becky relocated to Fairbanks after several visits to Alaska to see her best friend, our own Laura Shaeffer. Growing up in the Dakotas, Becky is not afraid of extreme winter weather and did not want to pass up the opportunity to explore and experience Alaska. Becky enjoys traveling, antiquing, and entertaining friends and family.
